About Professor Anastas Ishirkov’s Name and Pseudonyms

Summary

The origin and meaning of professor Anastas Ishirkov’s (1868–1937) name and surname are discussed in this paper. The name Anastas has a Greek origin and when translated, it means „resurrected“. The surname of Ishirkov, according to experts, comes from the Persian-Turkish „Sir“, which means „a lion“, „a brave man“. The contribution of this article is in revealing the two pseudonyms of the distinguished professor, unknown until now, namely „I“ and „Iv. Milin“. A number of geographic and cultural sites in Bulgaria have been named after Anastas Ishirkov, such as a village in Dobrudja, four streets in Lovetch and Sofia and a lecture-hall in the University of Sofia.
